Gravel Cycling Gems: Your Guide to Finding the Best Local Gravel Cycling Routes in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is known for its scenic farm roads, rolling hills, and a network of less-traveled dirt and gravel lanes, and as a result, has quickly become a gravel cycling destination. If you’re looking to ditch the pavement and explore the beauty beyond the main roads, you’re in the right place. But how do you find those hidden gems, those perfect gravel cycling routes that will leave you exhilarated and wanting more? Here’s your guide to uncovering the best local gravel cycling adventures right here in the keystone state:

1. Online Mapping Tools (Beyond the Obvious):

  • Strava Heatmap & Route Builder: While you might use Strava for tracking rides, its heatmap is an invaluable tool for discovering where other cyclists are venturing. Look for the faint lines indicating popular gravel segments. The route builder also allows you to prioritize unpaved roads when planning. Toggle between global and personal heatmaps to find new paths or revisit gravel segments you’ve already discovered.
  • Ride with GPS: This platform is a favorite among cyclists for its detailed mapping features. You can filter routes by surface type (including unpaved) and explore routes created and shared by other users in the Lancaster area. Pay attention to route descriptions and comments for insights into the gravel quality and overall experience. My favorite feature is the voice commands, which prompt you to take turns in advance, helping stay device-free while pedaling.
  • Komoot: Similar to Ride with GPS, Komoot excels in route planning and discovery, especially for off-road adventures. Explore user-generated tours and highlights in Lancaster County, often with specific notes about gravel sections.
  • Google Maps (with caution): While Google Maps can show unpaved roads, be cautious. Sometimes these are private driveways or poorly maintained tracks. Use satellite view to get a better sense of the road condition before committing. Look for roads labeled as “Dirt Road” or “Unpaved Road.”
  • GravelMaps.com: Gravel Maps is a network of rider-submitted gravel segments and routes. These submissions are typically all gravel, or at least 90%, so it’s a great resource for tying together a larger route or checking out off the beaten path connectors.

2. Tap your Local Gravel Cycling Community:

  • Local Bike Shops: Your local bike shop isn’t just a place for repairs; it’s a hub for cycling knowledge and community! Talk to the favorite bike mechanic – they often have insider knowledge of the best local bike routes and might even organize group gravel rides. Ask about recommended maps or local resources.
  • Cycling Clubs and Groups: My area in Central PA has a vibrant cycling community. Joining a local cycling club or group is one of the best ways to discover new routes and connect with experienced gravel riders who can share their favorite spots.
  • Online Forums and Social Media: Platforms like Facebook and Reddit have dedicated forums to cycling in Pennsylvania and can be goldmines for route recommendations. Ask for suggestions, share your own discoveries, and connect with fellow gravel enthusiasts.
  • Local Cycling Events: Participating in local gravel cycling events or races is a fantastic way to experience well-vetted routes and meet other riders.

3. Explore and Be Curious (Respectfully!):

  • Start with Known Gravel Segments: Begin by exploring gravel sections that are already somewhat known or marked on online maps. This will give you a feel for the local terrain and gravel quality.
  • Venture Off the Beaten Path (Gradually): Once you’re comfortable, start exploring those intriguing unpaved roads you see on the map. Be prepared for some trial and error, and always prioritize safety.
  • Pay Attention to Signage: Keep an eye out for “No Trespassing” signs or private road markers. Respect private property.
  • Bring the Right Gear: Gravel riding often involves varied terrain. Ensure you have a bike suitable for gravel (wider tires are key), a repair kit, water, snacks, and a way to navigate (phone with GPS or a dedicated cycling computer). Gravel trails can often be in the woods or in locations without cell service, so be prepared!
  • Tell Someone Your Plans: Before heading out on a solo gravel adventure, let someone know your planned route and expected return time.
  • Embrace the Adventure: Part of the fun of gravel cycling is the exploration and discovery. Be prepared for unexpected turns, beautiful scenery, and the satisfaction of finding a new favorite route.

My Favorite Pennsylvania Gravel Cycling Routes

Being based in Central Pennsylvania has its perks – I can get to almost any part of PA easily and start exploring. Below are some of my favorite gravel routes across the state:

  • Mount Gretna 5G: This route is a blend of rail trail, chunky climbs, and scenic farm roads. While not 100% gravel, it hits the good stuff – Horseshoe Trail, Governor Dick Park, and the Root Beer Barrel. My favorite part is Pumping Station Road back to the lot.
  • Butterscotch Pastry Ride: Starting in Phoenixville, this 37 mile loop takes you on a mix of paved and gravel roads, with a mid-ride stop at Butterscotch Pastry. Refuel with a sweet treat and coffee before you head back to your starting point. If you still have the legs for it, Phoenixville offers great murals and breweries within walking distance.
  • Michaux Reservoir Ride: Michaux State Forest is hands down my favorite place to go gravel cycling. The trails here are top notch and this route is the perfect introduction. It starts up by Fuller Lake – a great spot for a post-ride picnic – and takes you all the way to the Reservoir. Stop by the Caledonia State Park Campground for a water refill about halfway and bring your climbing legs for this one!

Finding the best local gravel cycling routes in Pennsylvania, is an ongoing adventure. By combining online resources, local knowledge, and a spirit of exploration, you’ll uncover countless miles of scenic and challenging gravel roads waiting to be ridden.
